Steal my ideas for making over $100,000 without leaving the house
Jul 28, 2024While many people assume I’m an extrovert because I go to networking events, speak at conferences, run webinars, guest on podcasts and am a social butterfly on social media, I’m actually equally an introvert and I really enjoy being at home. I was born a home body, and I like nothing more than spending all day in my warm and comfy pajamas. So when I realised as an independent consultant I could run my business and do my Change Management work completely from the comfort of my own home, I was 100% there. I passed the six-figure mark and made over $100,000 in my first full calendar year in business as a consultant, which was no small feat given it was also the year my partner decided to be attention-seeking (his words, not mine!) and have a liver transplant which involved 6 months going back and forth to hospital.
Here are my top ideas for setting yourself up for success for your first year in your independent consulting business… and you don’t even need to leave the house!
1. Take on international clients
My first consulting client was actually an international client with a local presence which meant the majority of my work was online apart from one of the workshops I ran.
2. Write it in your Service Agreement
Your Service Agreement spells out the parameters and assumptions of your engagement. For most of my consulting clients, I go onsite at my discretion rather than theirs. This is usually to run workshops, deliver capability or support team building or launch, rather than every single client or project need.
3. Stop trading time for money
By pricing and packaging your own solutions, you can set your own day rate (mine tripled overnight), choose your own clients, and offer the services that you want in the way that you want them. While you can work day rate, I always recommend and personally prefer Statement of Work, charging for deliverables rather than time spent.
4. Add on optional extras
During the course of a client engagement, additional needs or activities may come up. I just quote and add these onto my base package, and it still often ends up more cost-effective for the client versus hiring a day rate contractor full-time for 6 months.
5. Leverage LinkedIn
I’ll never forget the moment when I sat in a Tony Robbins event and heard the presenter say: “If you’re in a Business-to-Business business, LinkedIn is your social media platform.” At that time, I wasn’t in a B2B business (I was a Career Coach for female professionals) so I’d been unsuccessfully trying to make Facebook and Instagram work for me, but it instantly altered my focus and I went all in on LinkedIn and by the time I decided to start my consultancy, I’d built a great professional profile and presence for myself and have over 9,000 followers on LinkedIn today.
