Word of the Year for 2025
Jan 07, 2025Well, it’s the third time I’m doing a Word of the Year share so I guess it’s official: this is an annual tradition! I rule my life by threes, namely because I was born on a third so threes have always held a special little place in my heart.
Anywho, 2023 my Word of the Year was “Light”.
2024 my Word of the Year was “Energy”.
And so now 2025, my Word of the Year is…
I actually have two!
I’ve been on some year wrapping and goal setting online calls recently and when they prompted us what our “Word” or “Theme” of the year was, it took a little time for them to come to me but without a doubt there were two.
Ease.
Flow.
Ease and flow.
These aren’t new concepts to me. They’ve been swimming around me for a few years now. Two of my favourite business mentors, Denise Duffield-Thomas and Jacquelyn Atkins, both talk about Ease a lot. In fact, the E in Jacquelyn’s BEACH philosophy is Ease! She talks about avoiding “shoulds” in order to tap into your creativity and fun. If something feels like a “should”, it will probably feel hard and boring. So either reframe it to what you want to do or what would feel good or fun to you, leave it for another time when you do feel like it, or just don’t do it at all!
Denise on the other hand talks about Ease more in the context of one of the main money blocks most people have: “I have to work hard to make money.” Hands up who has this money block? I definitely do. I was fed that lifelong promise that if you work hard, you can do and be anything you want and money and success will come. And that did work for me for most of my life. But I do think times are really changing. Hard work isn’t enough anymore and you can’t just work harder: you’re already exhausted! As the old adage says, we have to “work smarter not harder”, and this is by finding the path of least resistance. It might be automating or batching tasks or processes, allowing others to help you, or shifting your internal mindset and beliefs so that your outer world instantly falls into place (one of the reasons I build so many Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Coaching tools and techniques into my Leading Successful Change program for you to use for your changes and yourself).
For me, when I think about Ease, I think about de-complicating my business and my life. I think about trotting out the tried-and-tested, but also dabbling in some new ideas and strategies. I think about relying on the wonderful support I have around me (for example, my cleaner at home, my assistant in my business, and my partner in my life), and scheduling things to free up time and energy rather than constrict and constrain me. And I think about setting up more automation and autopilot in my life and business. For example, I’m planning a few overseas trips this year and I’ve started setting up a second set of toiletries so I don’t have to pack and repack constantly (clothes are harder because I change seasons and climates too much). It’s these little moments of friction in day-to-day that I’m looking to smooth out.
So what’s with the Flow?
I believe that Ease creates space and it’s in this energetic vacuum that more good things flow in. Jacquelyn talks about the ebb and flow of the yin (rest, internal, feminine) and yang (action, external, masculine), but I do tend to think more about it as flowing in. While we don’t want to horde and never let go such that we become stale and stagnant (in Kabbalah, they talk about being a river not a swamp!), I do think that abundance is having more of the good stuff at your disposal. Creating space with Ease means that money, opportunities, students, clients, social events, and people can flow in.
Another aspect of Flow is our monthly cycle. The older I get, the more I can feel and experience not just my period (can’t really miss that one!) but also the other phases in my menstrual cycle: the follicular phase when I’m full of energy, the ovulation phase when I’m productive and clear, and the luteal phase when my endometriosis symptoms of pain, fatigue, and bloating crop up and I really need to slow down and rest. Every month I experience this flow and rather than rage against it, I am learning to embrace it and use each phase to its potential (there are different experts out there who talk about cycle syncing, but I’ve just heard about it from guests on a few podcasts so don’t have a specific recommendation).
Lastly, Flow pops up in my daily life - when I swim, ski, do yoga and attend English Country Dancing classes and festivals. Flow is feminine and freedom and fluidity. It’s letting the universe bring you what you need and want and receiving it with gratitude and pride. It’s knowing there’s an easier and flowier way to reach your goals and dreams for 2025 and beyond.
